Church News

New Altar frontal.

The newly worked green altar frontal is now in place and the Cathedral embroiderers are to be congratulated on a superb result.   Our sale table raised over £60 towards the cost of £750, and it is hoped that there will be further donations towards this cost.

Christmas services.

The church was completely filled for our Carol Service, and the Church looked beautiful - thanks going to the decorating team for doing such a splendid job.   The holly was also the best we have seen for years!

Flower rota.

Pat Barnes is now organizing the flower rota for the year ahead and, as ever, would be glad to hear from volunteers willing to provide an arrangement for one or two weeks (or a donation towards flowers).   Please telephone Pat on 01283 217319 to let her know which weeks would be convenient to you.   Volunteers are needed to cover services to be held from February 19th onwards (apart from the Lent and Advent periods or major festivals).   Newcomers to the rota would be particularly welcome, to spread the job more widely.

Church Services

There is a Smisby service, starting at 5.30 pm, on each of the first four Sundays in every month.   When there is a fifth Sunday in the month, the congregation is invited to one of the services held at Melbourne – details on the Melbourne Church web site:

www.melbourneparishchurch.co.uk

The St James services are Book of Common Prayer and the first Sunday in the month is normally Holy Communion, the other Sunday services being Evensong.   Occasionally the evening service is replaced by one at a different time – if in doubt please telephone any of the church officers to confirm details.

Rev Dr Mark Powell writes

Helen and I thoroughly enjoyed our first Christmas in Melbourne, together with all the traditional services.  I’m grateful to the rest of the staff team who helped cover services over the Christmas period, and to everyone else who contributed to the services in any way – making Christingles, decorating the churches, presenting seasonal music, and so on.  I was able to visit all four parishes on New Year’s Day, so saw how beautifully all the churches had been decorated.

The Christmas Quiz is something that I have prepared every year in previous parishes, and I’m grateful to the hundred or so people who bought a copy.  Apart from the book token prize, all the money went to the churches in which the quizzes were bought.  I’m pleased to announce that the overall winner, with a magisterial score of 104 out of 105 was RUTH SMITH – congratulations on a magnificent performance!  In second place, with a most honourable 102 points, was GRAHAM TRUSCOTT, and then third place was shared by five entries that amassed a score of 101.  If anyone is interested in the answers, please ask me for your corrected entry form.

In something of a role-reversal, I have been persuaded to gather the customary “Clerical Errors” team for the Melbourne Village Quiz.  Up to now, I’ve managed to cover up my general lack of knowledge by setting quizzes and organising quiz nights rather than attempting to answer questions.  So I’m rather relying on the rest of my team to cover over my ignorance!

As the Christmas and Epiphany season draws to a close, our thoughts begin to turn towards Lent, Holy Week and Easter.  I hope, soon, to be able to give details of our plans for the coming penitential season.

Helen joins me in wishing all of you a very Happy New Year.

Mark Powell

Prayer of the Month

O God, The Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, the Prince of Peace; give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions.

Take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly unison and concord; that as there is but one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may henceforth be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Bishop Humphrey Writes

Bishop Humphrey writes... Duty and Service

It’s safe to say that this year will be dominated – along with the Olympics – by the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Whilst most of the celebrations will be focused on the first week of June (when – in 1953 – the Coronation took place), the anniversary of the start of the reign falls in this month. 6th February must be a hard commemoration for Her Majesty, as she remembers the death of a beloved father, but for her people
